KOTA BAHARU, Dec 7 (Bernama) -- The structure of the KB Mall shopping complex where a car plunged from the third-floor car park after crashing through a retaining wall, is safe said state Tourism, Local Council and Culture committee chairman Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan.
He said representatives from the various departments who attended a special meeting today, namely Kota Baharu City Council-Bandaraya Islam (MPKB-BRI), Public Works Department (JKR), Police, Fire and Rescue Department and the KB Mall management disclosed that there were no defects or shortfalls in the approval of the building.
"The state government and the various departments that met today found nothing wrong in the structure of the building or its approval process. There were also no illegal extensions," he told reporters here today.
However, although the building has been declared safe and already opened for business today, the state government would take the necessary measures to ensure safety of the public who frequent the mall.
Takiyuddin said though the mall was opened for business today, the car park on the third floor would remain closed.
"We will also inspect all the shopping malls in the state to ensure their safety although we had been conducting such inspections regularly to determine its safety," he said.
Yesterday, a car plunged from the third-floor car park, and landed on the escalator of the KB Mall concourse, killing two and injuring two others, including the driver of the car.
During the 5pm incident, two students from Masterskills College (Kota Baharu branch) - Siti Nor Amira Samsuddin, 19 and Siti Nor Diana Azman, 18 – were crushed to death when the car driven by Nor Ain Said, 19, lost control and crashed through the car park wall and plunged onto the escalator.
Two others, Rashidah Ahmad Lutfi, 24, also a student of the same college and Nor Ain were injured and admitted to the Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital here.
Following the tragedy, the mall was closed for business yesterday and opened for business at about 2pm today.
Police investigations had revealed that the weak structure of the retaining wall was the reason for the car to plunge from the third-floor after crashing into it because the wall was built with bricks, without any reinforcement.
